Spring '08

I recently had the pleasure of mixing Jon Sordoni's new Lp in the Great Hall at Allaire in March. It was pretty cool to mix on the Neve Montserrat. I wish i could say that I could feel the history coming off the faders but you can't, they are just faders. But when you think about who has worked on the board, THAT feels super cool. The place is just amazing. Its sad to think that studios like that are going away.

Anyway, we mixed 8 tracks that Justin Shturtz mastered at Sterling. We cut the mixes both to 456 and Pro Tools. We mastered off the tape as it was a much nicer fit. The more I mix on vintage consoles from PT, the more I feel I need tape to "glue" the mixes together. Specifically, vintage Neve's(and some not so vintage Neve's) can get real harsh in the upper midrange while building up in the lower. While I find it advantageous to cut out excess rather than boost for what's lacking, tape smoothes out that upper mid edginess that ultimately occurs.

I finally finished The Queen Killing Kings debut LP after a year and a half of development and recording. I am really excited about this record because it feels so fresh. There is not a single guitar on the record, which is a first for me. The whole record was recorded and mixed at Pyramid in Manhattan on their mid '70's Api to PT HD@88.2.

I mixed the "The Real Me" off of Bob Parins new record. He is recording and producing this one himself and it really is a more focused and refined Bob. His resourcefulness and creativity really show on this track. Here is the before and after so you can see what was done. They are mp3's encoded w/ VBR@320 kbps.
